Silks and Sapphires

Grumbold examined the gleaming counter of his new shop and wiped his sleeve over an imagined smudge. He carefully adjusted a small display of precious necklaces and armbands to catch the sunlight and make them sparkle to best effect, and smoothed down the bolts of silk cloth in a rainbow of colours.
Mustering up his courage, he unlocked the door and swung it wide. Nervously he glanced out at the marketplace beyond as the first patrons of the day began to browse the stalls. Would anybody come?
