Week 4
Brystan again tried to make contact with Venstil, without success.
Selena participated in a ceremony at the Lhankor Mhy library, toadying to High Priestess Kenoth.
The Blossoming of Bonds
They said the feast had been like stepping into spring made flesh. Lanterns shaped like blossoms and feathered horses drifted overhead, petals fell from nowhere, and the scent of thawed earth and new flowers clung to every breath. The Queen’s Palace shimmered with life, garlands spiraling around green-veined pillars, dancers weaving through tables, and magic humming beneath the music like the pulse of the earth itself.
The first great moment came when the horns sounded and Garoor, Grumbold, Julian, and Torben knelt before King Argrath. The hall fell silent as the King raised his hands and named Garoor, Grumbold, and Julian as Barons, and Torben as Drighten of Sartar. The eruption of cheers shook the rafters. Torben talked of nothing else afterward, waving his “list of traitors” with the earnest enthusiasm of a man convinced destiny tugged him by the sleeve.
Grumbold lifted Oneldna in a red-token spin of triumph. Julian grinned fiercely beside Harmeleenrios. Garoor bowed with solemn dignity while Sorayr clung proudly to his arm.
Later, Lord Erik, marked by the fire of his red token, stepped forward to present a poem. He stuttered badly, stumbling over several lines while nervous laughter flickered through the crowd.
Baroness Ivarenna followed with her own poem honoring the Queen and Ernalda’s renewal. Those who heard it said it was the finest poem offered that night: clear, graceful, and steeped in the breath of spring. Even Inkarne Reaches All allowed herself a hint of visible approval.
Not every tale found bloom. Baron Rufus made a bold, passionate proposal to Daraea, but she refused him gently and walked out of the feast. He remained standing, hollow-eyed beneath lanterns suddenly too bright.
Elsewhere, Quatlu and Grumbold clasped arms and swore bonds of sworn friendship. Julian joined them shortly after. The Queen blessed Grumbold’s marriage with a gesture that left Oneldna radiant. Torben continued to circulate, extolling his future plans as Deputy of Public Harmony and waving his unsettlingly long list of alleged traitors.
Amid the grand gestures were quieter moments: disputes soothed, tempers cooled, households reconciled. The white tokens held as much sway as the red.
Some said that when the dancing finally slowed, the music lingered in the rafters. Others swore that the petals on the floor glowed faintly long after the Queen departed.
Duels Late Sea Season
What happened at the feast was mostly a matter of honor and rank. Nothing strange for springtime, but it caused some stir.
Quatlu, who is a brave man but not a noble, publicly declared friendships and loyalties to several of the titled guests. Now, no one doubts that Quatlu meant every word sincerely. The trouble is that, in Orlanthi customs, when a man of lower station receives the kind of societal status he does, it carries an unintended claim: it suggests he is placing himself on equal footing with those nobles.
If the nobles do nothing, it looks as though they accept that claim. And if they accept it, intentionally or not, their own standing weakens. People talk. Rival clans twist the story. Enemies whisper that the nobles are no better than common warriors who fight in woad and blue paint.
So, according to tradition, the nobles must answer the declaration in the proper ritual manner: Ararg, Julian, Torben, Garoor, and Harold must each face Quatlu in a formal duel next week.
It’s not a feud, and no one expects real injury. It’s a proving match—first blood, usually—with an elder to witness that everything was done by the book. These duels show that the nobles still hold their rightful rank, Quatlu has the courage to stand behind his bold words, and no dishonor sticks to either side.
After the duels, everyone’s honor will be settled, and the friendships that were declared can continue without giving offense to the gods or the ancestors.
So it’s nothing dark—just the old Orlanthi ways keeping the world properly balanced.
