Tribal hostilities at ceremonies

Post by Puckohue »

The rules on Tribal Hostilities state that "Tribal hostilities are suspended during cult ceremonies." Really? Since when? As late as 1631-9 there were duels at an Orlanth ceremony, and in 1631-10 there would have been, had not one of the parts been a Chalana Arroy cultist.

I remember the rule as "Tribal hostilities are suspended during cult ceremonies, unless the ceremony is at a warrior cult."

Did I just forget to update the rules on this?

Tribal hostilities (as opposed to general hostility) are actually quite rare, so it may be that an intended update was overtaken by other things. I see no problem with changing this, so long as you give a few months' notice.

It might be sensible to have an overview of hostilities somewhere, along the lines of 'Regimental hostilities are suspended during Court functions but not cult ceremonies; tribal hostility is always active; cult hostility is active during Warrior cult ceremonies but not others, nor at Court' (if that is the way it works). Checking several rule sections for every permutation can be time-consuming (for you too, I would imagine).

And I am a little concerned about the whole idea of tribal hostility. Joining a regiment or a cult is a choice, and if it becomes too dangerous you can choose to leave. But if you are the sole Boldhome member of a tribe that is hostile to four other characters you are going to be challenged until your Constition runs out, with no recourse unless you wish to volunteer for the front.

I say I would agree with Fionn's comments here and as a player who had a character that was the sole member of a tribe with 4 other characters in an opposing tribe it was somewhat daunting.....that was, of course, until good old Broar Hofarson joined Chalana Arroy and thus was able to avoid duelling!

If there is to be a change can there be a transition period, as suggested, say of a couple of Seasons?

You can always decline to duel without negative effect if your CON is below 50%. All players ought to have "copy-paste" duelling orders. There's been a few unnecessary PC deaths.

The tribal hostilities can be "problematic" for a player (but so can being born as a low CHA noble). The main reason I want them in the game is to add Gloranthan flair and player character interaction. I would actually have liked more of them (which would also make it less arbitrary), and will hopefully add more when the Sartar book is published by Chaosium ("next book to layout" according to Chaosium).

But yes, I will announce a future rule change to allow tribal hostility duels in warrior cult temples.

I'd love to see more duelling, but it's a bit tricky when the brawnier types can potentially kill full health EC 1&2 characters in a single blow, let alone anyone wounded but above 50%. There's quite a few of us in the rankings.

I would like to see more duelling, but I understand the problem of potentially losing a character to a single hit.
